Make a 3D Mech at Old Oakland Summer Stroll

On July 24th 30 years ago, Mechwarrior 2 was released for MS-DOS. To pay tribute to it, we’re putting together a special outdoor Mecha games exhibit outside. Inside, we’ll have access to our all-playable floor as well as a special 3D kitbashing workshop where you’ll assemble your own mecha from a bunch of parts! Get tickets in advance here!

What is "kit bashing"? Kit bashing is a technique derived from traditional, physical model kit techniques. Many scale models consisted of plastic stems connecting different pieces of the physical model together. When putting together a model, you'd break off the different components and then follow the instructions to create your own scale model!

But what if you want to be a bit more creative? You can buy a bunch of different kits and mash them together! Even the stems connecting the parts could be useful as tiny details for piping running along the hull of your vehicles or spaceships.

Some of the most iconic designs in digital entertainment were developed through kit bashing! Many iconic designs from Star Wars utilized kit bashing including the Millenium Falcon, AT-ATs, and the X-Wing fighters.

3D kit bashing is the digital analogy to this process; by starting off from a bunch of components, you can assemble them into a larger cohesive design. In addition to placing pieces where you'd like, you don't have to buy yet another scale of the model that you're borrowing from; you can simply scale components to the sizes that you need!
